NVTA

Leading the Way

NVTA is at the forefront of transportation technology, advancing solutions through planning, innovation and collaboration. As technology continues to transform transportation, we are seeing new opportunities to improve mobility and reduce congestion. By integrating real-time data, intelligent systems, and multimodal solutions, we support safe, equitable and sustainable travel across the region. Discover NVTA's transportation technology initiatives below.

Transportation Technology Strategic Plan

The Transportation Technology Strategic Plan (TTSP) was designed to foster a proactive approach to innovation that advances the vision and goals for Northern Virginia while reducing congestion. It now informs numerous NVTA work products and InNoVAtion Initiatives, and collectively helps NVTA continue to build momentum in the region.

The NVTA Transportation Technology Strategic Plan (TTSP) consists of strategies and an Action Plan, which were designed to proactively prepare for the use of evolving technologies to address travel demand on infrastructure, while keeping congestion reduction top of mind. The full TTSP is maintained as a living document, and NVTA staff will continue to provide regular updates on progress through the NVTA Chief Executive Officer’s monthly report to the Authority.

Recognizing no one can plan for continuously evolving technologies and infrastructure challenges alone, the Nine Strategies were identified and defined with the guidance of the NVTA CEO’s Transportation Technology Committee (TTC), comprised of local, regional and national thought-leaders representing a broad range of perspectives relevant to the development, implementation, operation, and impact of transportation technologies.

Regional Multi-Modal Mobility Program (RM3P)

rm3p logo

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority has teamed up with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) to co-sponsor a Regional Multi-Modal Mobility Program (RM3P), aiming to use collaboration and data to improve the functioning of the multimodal transportation system in Northern Virginia — which is consistent with NVTA’s vision for the region.

Visit the RM3P Website

The programs goals include:

oneOptimization: Predicts and manages traffic disruptions to keep travel efficient.

two Reliability: Provides accurate, real-time travel times for better trip planning.

threeTraveler’s Choice: Offers real-time, multi-modal options for flexible travel decisions.

RM3P Program Elements

dataData-Exchange Platform

The Data-Exchange Platform (DEP) will be a reliable, continuously updated, cloud-based data storage and exchange system. It will be used by regional partners and third-party providers to capture, process, and exchange information on real-time and historic multi-modal travel conditions. This platform will feed necessary data to other RM3P program elements and disseminate value-added and full-grown data produced by these elements.

Commuter Parking Information System

The Commuter Parking Information System (CPIS) will entail a real-time app-based  parking availability information system that provides reliable information about parking space availability at lots serving bus, vanpool, and carpool commuters.

Ai-Based Decision Support System

The AI-Based Decision Support System (AI-DSS) will help predict the impact of disruptions to the transportation network and provide coordinated response options to agencies. The tool for operators will use travel data to monitor emerging conditions and recommend plans for coordinated, multi-agency responses to congestion, incidents, and events.

Dynamic Incentivization

Dynamic Incentivization (DI) will be a data-driven system offering the public incentives to modify their travel choices and behaviors in response to real-time travel conditions. The incentives will be offered by regional agencies and third-party providers.

Multi-modal Analytical Planner (Deferred): The Multi-Modal Analytical Planner (MMAP) will be a collaboration tool for transportation service providers to pinpoint unmet needs in the transportation network.

InNoVAtion Events

Each year, NVTA, in partnership with the Intelligent Transportation Society of Virginia (ITSVA), hosts the Annual Northern Virginia Transportation Roundtable, gathering experts from the public and private sectors, to discuss innovation in transportation and impacts on the region.

Seasonally, NVTA hosts InNoVAtion Lunch and Learn webinars designed to encourage information exchange about topics supported by NVTA’s Transportation Technology Strategic Plan (TTSP) that are feasible immediately or in the near future (1-5 years). Each session focuses on a chosen topic with a presentation from a subject matter expert in the field, followed by moderate questions and answers from the online participants. View previous sessions on NVTA’s YouTube page.
