TransAction is the long-range, multimodal transportation plan for Northern Virginia. If you walk, bike, drive, or ride in this region, we want to hear from you! Your input is critical to helping us understand transportation needs and priorities. We seek your feedback to guide the development of TransAction and identify potential transportation projects that can keep NoVA moving.

From Vision to Reality

Focused on relieving congestion and improving quality of life for Northern Virginians, the Authority is advancing 106 regionally significant, multimodal projects, totaling nearly $2.5 billion in transportation investments for Northern Virginia’s transportation network.

THE AUTHORITY

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority is a regional body that is focused on delivering transportation solutions and value for Northern Virginia’s transportation dollars by bringing NoVA jurisdictions and agencies together to plan and program regional multimodal transportation projects focused on relieving congestion.

The Results Are In! 

Transportation Priorities Survey: We asked “What are your transportation needs and priorities?” You answered. An online survey was open from August 6, 2021 to September 19, 2021. Check out the demographics and locations of those who responded and the initial findings.

Ribbon-Cutting Celebration

On October 7th, the Northern Virginia Transportation AuthorityCity of Falls Church, and the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NOVA Parks), co-hosted a ribbon-cutting event celebrating the completion of the W&OD Dual Trails Enhancement Project in the City of Falls Church. The NVTA awarded NOVA Parks more than $3.24M in Regional Revenues to fund the W&OD Trail Enhancements Project. Learn more.

Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Held at the New OmniRide W. Bus Maintenance & Storage Facility

OmniRide, in partnership with the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, hosted a ribbon cutting for OmniRide’s Western Bus Maintenance and Storage Facility on August 11th.
The new facility will allow OmniRide to improve and expand transit services for western Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park residents and the Northern Virginia business community, and will help to reduce congestion along the I-66 corridor, as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project, impacting the region at large. State and local leaders celebrated a milestone in improvements at Route 7 (East Market Street) and Battlefield Parkway in Leesburg on June 28, 2021, cutting the ribbon on a new interchange and removing the final traffic signal from Berryville to Sterling, aiming to relieve congestion and improve safety for the more than 100,000 vehicles moving through the area each day. Authority Adopts Strategies and Action Plan to Proactively Plan for Innovation in Transportation

On May 13, 2021, the Authority adopted the inaugural NVTA Transportation Technology Strategic Plan’s Action Plan and Eight Strategies within, that focus on mobility, accessibility, and resilience, while embracing the core values of safety, equity and sustainability. Town of Hillsboro Mayor Proclaims June 18th NVTA Day!

During the February 11, 2021 Authority Meeting, Hillsboro Mayor, Roger Vance, proclaimed June 18th NVTA Day in the Town, to show the Authority gratitude for helping make the Rt. 9 Traffic Calming project a reality! A Route 9 grand opening event will be hosted on NVTA Day this summer. Thank you, Town of Hillsboro...We're honored and can't wait to celebrate with you!

6th Annual NoVA Transportation Roundtable Went Virtual

The popular Annual Northern Virginia Transportation Roundtable filled up quickly once again; however, due to high demand, a live-stream was offered on NVTA’s YouTube Channel. The Authority is currently funding five Bus Rapid Transit projects in Northern Virginia ... Envision Route 7, Richmond Highway BRT, the West End Transitway, Duke Street Transitway and the Pentagon City Transitway Extension projects. Read more about these projects, here.

 

Current Programs & Projects

FY2018-2023 Program

The Authority adopted its first six-year transportation program, the FY2018-2023 Program on June 14, 2018. The program funds 44 regionally significant, multimodal transportation projects totaling more than $1.285 billion.

30% Local Distribution Fund Projects

Each year, the Authority distributes 30% of its revenues to the member localities in which the taxes and fees are raised. So far, member localities have used their 30% revenues for projects like bus operation expenses, Capital Bikeshare and pedestrian improvements.

Regional Transportation Projects

TransAction

The Authority is responsible for developing and updating the long range regional transportation plan for Northern Virginia, currently TransAction. This long range transportation plan is used to evaluate and prioritize the funding of transportation projects in Northern Virginia.
