Northfax Infrastructure Ribbon-Cutting

May 20, 2019 @ 11:00 am

Northfax Infrastructure Construction Concludes; Ribbon-Cutting Scheduled for May 20
FAIRFAX, Va. — Construction of the storm water and transportation improvements at the intersection of Route 123/Chain Bridge Road and Fairfax Boulevard (Route 50/29), otherwise known as “Northfax,” is concluding after two and a half years. This project, which the City of Fairfax had been planning for nearly 20 years, will eliminate significant roadway flooding at the intersection and provide transportation and safety improvements for both vehicles and pedestrians.

The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting in celebration of the Northfax construction completion. The event will be held at 11 a.m. on May 20 in the parking lot of the former Rite Aid (10521 Fairfax Boulevard, at the southwestern corner of the intersection). The ribbon-cutting is hosted by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) and the city.

As the final touches are completed on the $42.5 million project, drivers and pedestrians alike will see the following improvements:

Elimination of roadway flooding with the construction of a new box culvert from Chain Bridge Road to Eaton Place parallel to Fairfax Boulevard
Widening of Chain Bridge Road to six lanes between Fairfax Boulevard and Eaton Place
Improved Fairfax Boulevard and Chain Bridge Road intersection, including a realigned transition of Fairfax Boulevard approaching Chain Bridge Road from the west
Improved turn lanes on all approaches
New southbound traffic signal at Orchard Street
Upgraded traffic signals and mast arms
New sidewalks throughout the project area and upgraded pedestrian accommodations at intersections

“A list can’t capture the real value of these improvements,” says Fairfax City Manager Rob Stalzer. “Not only will people want to walk and drive in this area, but businesses will seek opportunities to put their roots in this dynamic crossroad.”

“Travelers and residents will continue to benefit from these improvements,” City of Fairfax Mayor David Meyer adds. “As part of the FY2015-16 NVTA funding program evaluation process, analysis led by VDOT, it was projected that Northfax Intersection improvements will save a total of 450,000 plus person-hours of delay by 2040.”

Praising the state and local partnership, NVTA Chair Martin E. Nohe says, “The Northfax Intersection project demonstrates ongoing collaborative efforts to alleviate congestion and improve mobility for motorists and pedestrians alike in Northern Virginia. Thanks to everyone involved who saw this vision through to reality, the community will enjoy a safer roadway and less congestion.”

VDOT funded about $23.5 million of the Northfax project, and NVTA funded about $15 million. The city contributed about $4 million towards the project.

“City staff, in collaboration with their consultant and VDOT partners, did a wonderful job on delivering this complex project within a highly developed urban corridor,” says Leonard (Bud) Siegel, NOVA district local assistance program manager.

Drivers may see construction vehicles in the area for a few more weeks as infrastructure improvements wrap up, such as a pipe crossing at Eaton Place, final paving, signal poles at Orchard Street and pavement markings. Information: 703-385-7810.
