From Vision to Reality

Focused on relieving congestion and improving quality of life for Northern Virginians, the Authority is advancing 94 regionally significant, multimodal projects, totaling more than $1.975 billion in transportation investments for Northern Virginia’s transportation network.

Hillsboro Groundbreaking

On July 1, the Authority’s Chairman and several Authority members joined the Town of Hillsboro to celebrate the Groundbreaking of the Route 9 Traffic Calming Project. This project is the first of our newly adopted Six Year Program to break ground!


The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority is a regional body that is focused on delivering real transportation solutions and value for Northern Virginia’s transportation dollars by bringing Northern Virginia jurisdictions and agencies together to prioritize projects and implement solutions.

What's New?


On December 19, NVTA joined the City of Alexandria, Metro and the Commonwealth to break ground on the Potomac Yard Metrorail Station. Nearly $70M in NVTA funding is being allocated towards this regionally signficant project. Hundreds of project and regional partners and stakeholders gathered for the celebration, including members of the community, elected officials such as Gov. Ralph Northam and representatives from federal, state and regional agencies. Learn more.

FY2020-2025 Six Year Program Update - Candidate Projects Released

During the evaluation phase (November 2019 – February 2020), NVTA staff will conduct detailed reviews of each application and prepare summaries of quantitative and qualitative evaluations.The candidate project list now available includes 41 applications from 13 jurisdictions/agencies, with a combined request of approximately $1.44 billion. TransAction Open House and Listening Session

You will soon have the opportunity to weigh in on the future of transportation and provide feedback and suggestions on long-range multimodal transportation planning. On Thursday, January 9, 2020, NVTA will host an Open House and Listening Session focused on the update of Northern Virginia's long-range transportation plan, TransAction. Learn more.


On October 15, NVTA joined VDOT, the Town of Leesburg and Loudoun County to host a groundbreaking on Route 7 at Battlefield Parkway Interchange in the Town of Leesburg. Upon completion, capacity will be increased, safety and traffic flow improved, and new options will be available for cyclists and pedestrians. $58 million in NVTA regional revenues is being allocated towards this project throughout three funding programs (FY2015-16, FY2017 and FY2018-23). Ribbon Cutting

The completion of the Route 28 (From Linton Hall Road to Fitzwater Drive) project was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held in Prince William County (PWC) on Wednesday, October 9. Featured speakers included Marty Nohe, NVTA Chairman and PWC Coles District Supervisor; Hal Parrish, Mayor, City of Manassas, and Authority member; Corey Stewart, Chairman of PWC Board of County Supervisors; and Jeanine Lawson, PWC Brentsville District Supervisor.

Current Programs & Projects

FY2018-2023 Program

The Authority adopted its first six-year transportation program, the FY2018-2023 Program on June 14, 2018. The program funds 44 regionally significant, multimodal transportation projects totaling more than $1.285 billion.

30% Local Distribution Fund Projects

Each year, the Authority distributes 30% of its revenues to the member localities in which the taxes and fees are raised. So far, member localities have used their 30% revenues for projects like bus operation expenses, Capital Bikeshare and pedestrian improvements.

Regional Transportation Projects

The map displays all projects funded with 70% regional funds in all four of the Authority’s funding programs to date [FY2014, FY2015-16, FY2017 and FY2018-2023 Six Year Program].


The Authority is responsible for developing and updating the long range regional transportation plan for Northern Virginia, currently TransAction. This long range transportation plan is used to evaluate and prioritize the funding of transportation projects in Northern Virginia.
